The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Sunday publicly acknowledged reports of alleged irregularities related to the National Eligibility Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 and confirmed that information regarding suspected malpractice has already been escalated to central agencies for investigation. The development follows an operation initiated by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG), which has brought fresh scrutiny to the integrity of one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance exams. In an official statement issued on X, the NTA maintained that the NEET UG examination on May 3 was conducted under “full security protocols” at all centers and stressed that the agency would not speculate on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
Details of NTA multi-level security measures
Amid growing concern among medical aspirants and parents, the testing agency outlined the elaborate security framework deployed during the examination process.According to the NTA, the question papers were transported in GPS-tracked vehicles with unique watermark identifiers designed to ensure traceability. The examination centers were monitored through CCTV surveillance with the help of AI connected to the central control room. The agency added that biometric authentication is mandatory for every candidate and 5G jammers are working at the centers to prevent digital fraud and unauthorized communication. The statement was meant to bolster the agency’s claim that strong security measures were in place during the conduct of the exam.
On May 8, information about suspected corruption was shared.
The NTA disclosed that it received information about the alleged corrupt activities on May 7, four days after the exam.“This information was forwarded by NTA on the morning of May 8, 2026 to central agencies for independent verification and necessary action,” the agency told ANI.Although the NTA did not disclose the exact nature of the alleged irregularities, the confirmation that central agencies are now involved has intensified the focus around the examination process. The Rajasthan SOG’s intervention has further fueled concerns, especially given the country’s history of high-profile recruitment and entrance exam controversies.
“NTA will not pre-judge the inquiry”
In its statement, the agency adopted a cautious stance and said investigations are ongoing. “NTA will not pre-judge an inquiry, nor determine its likely outcome. Whatever the agencies determine — which may require further action — will be transparently assessed and disclosed in accordance with established procedures,” the agency said. These words reflect the sensitivities surrounding NEET UG, an exam that directly affects the academic future of millions of students seeking admission to medical colleges across India. Any allegation related to the examination process often raises public concern, given the fierce competition and limited number of MBBS seats across the country.
NEET UG is among the highest stake exams in India.
NEET UG acts as a single window entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS and allied medical programs across India. With lakhs of candidates every year, this exam is one of the most stressful academic exams in the country. Any controversy surrounding its conduct has significant implications for the reputation of students, institutions and the wider examination system. As investigative agencies continue to probe the alleged irregularities, candidates and families across the country are expected to keep abreast of further developments in the coming days.
