The author published an essay in The Small Bow about their bond and opened up about the hardships they’ve faced over the years.In the essay, the actor recalled his struggle with addiction and how it affected his childhood. He recalled how often he sent the case to buy his cigarettes and how many times he had to throw away his drugs as a child.“When I was little, you were my mom, until your boyfriend gave you heroin. You were my mom when you were clean, in rehab, but sometimes you were also Tatum. I thought Tatum was taking my mom away. Now I think mom and Tatum just wanted something different. I don’t think mom and Tatum always got along,” the 39-year-old wrote in the essay.He later opened up about his journey with addiction and how, at times, he had to distance himself from his mother in order to recover and stay healthy. McEnroe also recalled what happened when his mother had a stroke in 2020. After the medical incident, the actor was admitted into a coma that lasted for about 6 weeks. He later checked into another treatment facility to get better.
