CHENNAI: Autorickshaw driver R Saravanan’s daughter V Scindia broke down in tears on Friday after learning that she had emerged as the school topper in the Tamil Nadu Class 12 board exams with 595 out of 600 marks. A student of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, Scindia said that she stayed away from mobile phones and social media during her preparation. Speaking to TOI, he said his revision exam scores were between 570 and 580, and he did not expect to score so high in the final exams.
Three cents in commerce stream
Scindia obtained cents in accountancy, commerce and economics. She said she now plans to focus on preparing for the Chartered Accountancy Foundation course. “I dedicate this success to my parents and teachers, especially my Tamil teacher who treated me like her own daughter,” she said. Scindia added that financial difficulties at home motivated her to pursue a vocational course. “There were times when my father faced financial difficulties. I want to be financially independent and support my parents,” she said. Her father Saravanan earns Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 a month as an autorickshaw driver. He said Scindia had earlier studied in a private school in Ashok Nagar but shifted to a government school after class 10 as she could not afford the annual fees.
The school has a pass ratio of 99.4%.
Before opting for the commerce stream, Scindia scored 464 out of 500 in her class 10 exams. “I am sure she will be successful in whatever she chooses,” Saravanan said. School headmistress K Vasuki said that the institution has recorded 99.4 per cent pass percentage this year. A total of 686 students from the school appeared for the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Certificate examinations. “Government schools continue to help students from economically weaker families,” Vasuki said. Tamil Nadu secured an overall pass percentage of 95.20 in the Class 12 board exams this year. Girls scored 97% while boys scored 93.19%. 2,639 schools across the state registered 100% pass results, including 489 government schools. Computer Science recorded the highest centum with 6,945 students securing full marks.
