Amanpreet Singh Gill after the former India U-19 fast bowler passed away at the age of 36 in Chandigarh on Wednesday.Kohli, who shared the dressing room with Gill during his early days in the India Under-19 set-up, expressed his shock and grief at the untimely demise in an emotional social media post.
“Shocked and saddened to hear of Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Om Shanti,” Kohli wrote on X.Gill, a right-arm medium pacer, represented Punjab in six first-class matches and was also part of the inaugural season of the IPL with Kings XI Punjab. He represented India in several youth ODIs and three-day youth Tests in 2007, touring England, Malaysia and Sri Lanka during his junior cricket years. However, he narrowly missed out on selection for India’s 2008 Under-19 World Cup winning team under Kohli.The cricket community pays tribute.The Punjab Cricket Association also issued a heartfelt statement mourning Gill’s death and remembering his contribution to Punjab cricket.The PCA said, “Punjab Cricket Association mourns Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and member of Senior Selection Committee, Punjab. He served Punjab cricket with dedication and passion, representing teams like India Under-19, Kings XI Punjab, and Punjab.”Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan Also shared a condolence message.“Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of former Punjab cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill at such a young age. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and everyone who knew him. Om Shanti,” Dhawan wrote on X.Meanwhile, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh He remembered Gill as a “quiet, hard-working cricketer who loved the game.”“Shared dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Om Shanti,” Yuvraj posted.
