Melora Hardin recalls improvising an iconic scene
During an appearance on the ‘Office Ladies’ rewatch podcast, Hardin talked about one of her most memorable scenes and revealed that it wasn’t completely scripted.Speaking with former co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, Hardin discussed a scene featuring her character Jan and her character. Steve CarellIt’s Michael Scott, where the two are seen arguing while walking and riding in the elevator.Fischer described the sequence as one of his favorite moments of the session, and Hardin revealed that it was largely improvised.“That was when they gave us the bag of goodies. That was the scene where they basically said, ‘We’re going to rewrite the scene. We don’t like it. Basically, you have to play this beat. You improvise. We’re going to rewrite it. We’re going to come back, have fun,'” Hardin recalled. ‘We had to improvise’. He also explained that the actors had little choice but to rely on improvisation.“We went, and I know, I would definitely say that scene is 90 percent improvised,” he said. Asked why improvisation was necessary, Hardin added, “They didn’t like the way it was played, the way it was written.”
