On April 21, Joel’s mother, Shaneka Greene, created a GoFundMe page where she shared the sad news. He wrote: “Joel and his wife, Kiara Brokenbrough, were married 4 years ago and are expecting their first child in June. They were in the process of moving back to California from West Virginia to make a new home for their growing family.”Further detailing the “unexpected” tragedy that left her in deep grief and sorrow, the page continued: “Kiara went to her Heavenly home as Baby Jonah entered his earthly home.”Baby Jonah is in the NICU; the family updated, “He has begun his long journey to grow stronger and healthier every day. Jonas is a cutie and a fighter, and by God’s grace and POWER, we know he will amaze the doctors with his daily progress.”

Expressing his sadness in a social media post on April 13, Joel shared, “I never imagined I’d be writing this, especially so soon.”He continued, “It’s taken me a while to process what happened and make sense of it all. As mentioned, they were able to bring the cost of their celebration down to $500. So one of the major steps came from Kiara, who bought her wedding dress for $47. Another step was asking wedding guests to purchase their own refreshments at the reception.While talking about the wedding, Kiara told Good Morning America: “You have a wedding, you witness it with witnesses, swearing to your spouse, swearing to God that you’re going to be together for the rest of your life.
