A technician setting up a pop superstar stage Shakira to perform a free concert this week died on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.Authorities and organizers have confirmed that the man, who is part of the construction work crew, suffered leg injuries during a lifting system. Several people have been working for weeks to set up a stage on the sands of Copacabana Beach in the Brazilian city, where a world-wide crowd is expected as part of the Colombian singer’s record-breaking world tour on May 2.The workers managed to free the man, and he was taken to the hospital, “Unfortunately, the technician passed away in the hospital”, announced the organizer of the Bonus Track concert in a statement.“Out of nowhere, we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was on the ground,” Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, 51, who was on the beach at the time, told AFP.“People were saying a man was trapped underneath. People ran to get him out.”Shakira has not commented on the death of the employee.After the death of the man, the construction work of the stage resumed on Monday. The organizers of the concerts have expressed support and solidarity with the company responsible for the staging, its “employees and the victim’s family” following the tragic accident.“It’s a sad thing that it happened, but the concert should go on,” said 41-year-old singer Anita Costa.Many other beachgoers said they regretted the worker’s death and believed the concert should go ahead as planned.
