Veteran Bollywood actor Bharat Kapoor died on Monday at the age of 80, leaving behind a rich legacy spanning theatre, film and television.Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news on Instagram, expressing his grief. He wrote, “Sad to learn of the demise of veteran theater and film actor Bharat Kapoor ji. I have great memories of working with him in the early days of my career. Great man Om Shanti.”
Kapoor died around 3.30 pm at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital. His last rites were performed in the evening, at 18:30, in the presence of relatives and close friends.The actor and his close friend Avtar Gill told India Today, “I just came from the cremation which took place at 6.30 pm. He died around 3 pm today at Sion Hospital in Mumbai. He had not been well for the last three days. In the last few days, his multiple organs began to fail.’
A career spanning four decades
Bharat Kapoor started his career in the film industry in 1972 and went on to build a career that spanned almost four decades. Largely known for his villainous roles, he became a familiar face in Hindi cinema throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s.He acted in several notable films including Noorie (1979), Ram Balram (1980), Love Story (1981), Bazaar (1982), Ghulami (1985), Aakhree Raasta (1986), Satyamev Jayate (1987), Swarg (1990), Khuda Gawa (1992), and. His performances in these films added weight to the narrative, establishing him as a reliable character actor.She later appeared in films like Barsaat (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996) and Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (2004), showing her ability to adapt across the ages.Apart from films, Bharat Kapoor also made his mark on television with shows like Campus, Parampara, Rahat, Saans, Amanat, Tara, Chunauti and Kahani Chandrakanta Ki. His versatility made it easy for him to transition between mediums.
