In Lakhimpur Kheri’s Dhoraha tehsil, where many families are living on embankments after losing their land to river erosion, a quiet success story has emerged. Uma Shankar Jaiswal, a class 12 student from this area, has topped the district in the Uttar Pradesh Board Intermediate examination. His success is notable not only for his grades but also for the conditions in which he studied.Uma Shankar’s family had to leave their home after the Ghagra river washed away their land. They now live in a makeshift hut on the embankment in Ramnagar Bagha village, about 60 km from the district headquarters. With no access to smartphones or televisions and limited resources, everyday life is difficult. However, he remained focused on his studies.Uma Shankar, a student of a school in Ninapur area, secured 93% marks in science stream and topped the district merit list. Its preparation depended on consistency and routine rather than access to digital tools.His findings drew the attention of the district administration. According to news agency PTI, District Magistrate Anjani Kumar Singh went to his house to congratulate him. Sitting with the family inside their small house, the officer showered Uma Shankar with garlands and gifts.During the visit, Uma Shankar spoke about her future plans. He said he wanted to be an engineer. He also said that he likes to write poems and ghazals in his spare time.The District Magistrate assured them of support for future competitive examinations. He also praised the role of Uma Shankar’s family, his father Bhagwati Prasad, mother Kamana, and elder brother Om Prakash, who encouraged him in difficult situations.
