Rajpal Yadav, who is currently basking in the box office for his latest release ‘Bhooth Bangla’, recently challenged the longstanding public assumptions surrounding the check bounce case that landed him in jail. The controversy dates back to 2010 when Rajpal allegedly borrowed 5 crores to finance ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. Released in 2012, the film failed at the box office, and the loan was unpaid, leading to legal action. Reflecting on the same in a recent interview, Rajpal Yadav said he didn’t go to jail because he couldn’t afford the 5 million; the problem was bigger than money. Thus, he has decided to fight the case for the rest of his life and never solve it. He added that the entire case caused him a loss of 22 million.
Rajpal Yadav leads the check bounce case
In the conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Rajpal was asked why he was not paying back the 5 crores, despite having money and a job at that time. The “Bhool Bhulaiyaan” actor explained, “This is the point of my case, it’s not that I can’t pay 5 million euros. It’s too early to say why I went to jail or whether I have money or not.”The actress further elaborated on how it wasn’t just about the money; the matter would have been over long ago. “If it was only a matter of 5 million, it would have been resolved in 2012, but because of that 5 million, I have lost 17 million. At that time, the case was not in the courts, when the person jeopardized the value of 17 million euros of my film. This person then invested 75 million percent of the other film.“
Claim of Rajpal Yadav 22 million loss and the determination to never settle
Elaborating on the matter further, the actor mentioned how the whole scenario cost him a loss of 22 crores. He said, “Rs 5-7 crores were to be spent on the release of the film, and the total production budget of the film was Rs 22 crores. Even if you are an enemy, you would not stop the release of the project, especially when 10 others have also invested money in it. We have been talking about the intention behind giving those Rs 5 crores.” My intention was good. What was my fault?”The film had a short run at the box office, failing to reach the 200 screen mark, all of which led to a huge loss. In addition, a press conference held by the reported donor added to the problems.“The film was supposed to be released in over 1000 screens, Amitabh Bachchan launched his music album, but it didn’t last even three days. He sunk 22 crores for holding a press conference, his intention was bad, which cost me 22 crores,” said Rajpal Yadav, before adding, “I’ve been saying the same thing for the last few years.” The film had 200 artists, including Dara Singhji, but he made a problem like I owed him 50 crores and ran away with it. When he already had post-dated checks, why did he bring a stay order at the film’s premiere? Shortly after the High Court rejected their stay order, this party held a press conference of the complaint. That’s why the film couldn’t even be released in 200 screens.”The actor added that with the right intention in his heart, he will never go back, he will never settle down. “I will continue to fight with him for the rest of my life for this purpose – I will not go to a settlement,” Rajpal said.
