The final result will depend on factors such as the amount of substance found and the circumstances surrounding its use.
According to a report in The News, Anti-Doping Organization of Pakistan founder chairman Dr. Waqar Ahmed explained the framework governing such cases. “There is no penalty for recreational use of substances outside of competition,” he explained. “However, if such substances are detected during competition, the player may face consequences ranging from a simple reprimand to a suspension of up to six months.““Each case is decided on its own merits. Education, intent, and rehabilitation all play a role in determining the outcome,” he added. With Nawaz Sharif currently in Pakistan, the ICC has handed over the investigation to the PCB due to logistical and practical reasons. The PCB’s medical panel has already completed its investigation and submitted a report to the ICC, which will take a final decision following the alleged violation during the ICC event.Dr. Waqar noted, “It is time-consuming and resource-intensive for ICC committee members to travel and conduct inquiries locally.” “Therefore, the subsidiary is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and submitting its findings to the governing body of the game for a final decision.”Recreational substances commonly flagged in such cases include cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA. Nawaz is expected to explain how the substance entered his system, whether through inadvertent use, drugs or other means. There is also a possibility that the drugs prescribed during the rehabilitation phase could play a role in the defense he used before the T20 World Cup 2026.Nawaz was scheduled to join Surrey County Cricket Club for the upcoming T20 Blast after receiving a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the PCB. However, that deal has now reportedly fallen through, and he will no longer feature for the club this summer. Despite the ongoing investigation, Nawaz continues to play in the Pakistan Super League, representing Multan Sultans. He recently bowled three wicketless overs in a six-wicket win over Rawalpindi in Karachi. The outcome of the investigation will be important to determine Nawaz’s future in international cricket. If he is found guilty of violating the anti-doping rules, he could face suspension or further disciplinary action.
