In an interview with Mid-day, Jasmine Sandlas recalled her father’s journey, saying, “When we lived in India, my father had a prestigious job… He was a professor at the Law School.” After moving to the US, survival became the main priority of status. He told that his father had to do manual labor at a gas station. “His first job was at a gas station, pumping gas… he sacrificed his whole life,” he said, emphasizing how he gave up a life of comfort and respect to secure a better future for his children.

Jasmine spoke of the harsh and humble conditions they experienced in those early years. “We lived in a one-bedroom apartment … there were six of us,” she said, adding that they relied on food stamps for their daily needs. The experience left a strong impression on him, especially as he tried to settle in a new country without knowing English. He also opened up about his mother’s role, saying that both of his parents worked tirelessly to support the household. “My mother also worked… like a majdoor (labourer) level job,” he added, highlighting the hardships they endured both physically and emotionally.

Even after years of struggle, his father was able to rebuild his professional life. He eventually became a legal interpreter, translating Punjabi into English in court, which gave the family more financial stability. Sandlas also briefly worked in the same field. In retrospect, he credits his parents’ sacrifices for shaping his journey and career. Their tenacity not only carried the family through difficult times, but also set the stage for their rise in the music industry.
