In an interview with Mid-day, Jasmine Sandlas recalled her father’s journey, saying, “When we lived in India, my father had a prestigious job… He was a professor at the Law School.” After moving to the US, survival became the main priority of status. He told that his father had to do manual labor at a gas station. “His first job was at a gas station, pumping gas… he sacrificed his whole life,” he said, emphasizing how he gave up a life of comfort and respect to secure a better future for his children.

Jasmine spoke of the harsh and humble conditions they experienced in those early years. “We lived in a one-bedroom apartment … there were six of us,” she said, adding that they relied on food stamps for their daily needs. The experience left a strong impression on him, especially as he tried to settle in a new country without knowing English. He also opened up about his mother’s role, saying that both of his parents worked tirelessly to support the household. “My mother also worked… like a majdoor (labourer) level job,” he added, highlighting the hardships they endured both physically and emotionally.
