New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education has directed affiliated schools to set up comprehensive skill labs as part of efforts to strengthen skill-based education. This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, where vocational education is an integral part of school education.The directive follows Circular No. Skill-75/2024, which outlines the infrastructure, timelines, and requirements for implementation. Schools are directed to integrate academic instruction as well as practical learning environments to support competency development.Infrastructure requirements and lab structureSchools are required to set up one comprehensive skill lab of 600 square feet or two separate labs of 400 square feet each for classes VI to XII. In the two-lab model, one facility is earmarked for classes VI to X, and the other for classes XI to XII.Labs aim to provide a space for hands-on, activity-based learning in multiple skill areas. Facilities must ensure accessibility, safety standards, and adaptability to accommodate diverse professional disciplines and student needs.Time frame for compliance and commitment criteriaIt is mandatory for all schools applying for new affiliation to set up their comprehensive skills labs. They must have a fully equipped laboratory as one of the criteria for the affiliation process.Schools already having affiliation status have been given three years from the date of issue of this circular. The last date fixed by the board is 22 August 2027. Installation during this period has to be done using proper tools and machinery.Theory vs. PracticeThis step will help students develop practical skills by linking theoretical knowledge with real applications.These labs will also facilitate interdisciplinary learning, enabling students to engage in activities that incorporate subject-based knowledge. It is hoped that this initiative will promote employability and professional readiness among learners.Guidelines and framework for implementationGuidelines on infrastructure, equipment, safety standards and other related issues are elaborated by CBSE. The list of lab equipment mentioned here is indicative only, and each school may choose to add equipment according to its needs.Heads of all schools are required to take appropriate measures to build and use these labs effectively.
