The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified through its latest post on Platform X (formerly Twitter) that it is not necessary to get an APAAR ID for admission to schools, clearing many misconceptions about the digital student ID system.It should be noted that Indian schools are rapidly adopting digitization for recording purposes, leaving many parents wondering if such digitization is necessary for enrollment.
What is APAAR ID?
APAAR ID — short for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry — is part of the Centre’s broader push towards digitizing education under the Academic Bank of Credits framework. It is designed as a unique, lifelong digital identity for students, enabling seamless tracking of their educational journey across schools, boards, and even higher education institutions.In essence, APAAR serves as a central repository where a student’s academic records—mark sheets, transfer certificates, and other credentials—can be securely stored and accessed. The goal of the system is to reduce paperwork, prevent duplication, and ensure continuity, especially for students who frequently change schools or move between states.
There is no entry requirement.
However, NCERT has clearly emphasized that APAAR is a facilitating tool — not a gatekeeping mechanism. “A child can still be admitted without an APAAR ID. It is not a requirement,” the council said in its post, reiterating that no student should be denied entry to school for lack of a digital ID.This distinction is important. While APAAR enhances administrative efficiency and record portability, it does not override a child’s fundamental right to education. Schools are expected to continue admissions through the current process, regardless of whether the student has an APAAR ID.
A tool for convenience, not exclusion.
However, as per the clarification issued by NCERT, it should be noted that although the primary objective of APAAR is to facilitate the documentation process, its use remains optional.The importance of this process has been emphasized by authorities and academicians as through the use of digital databases, universities can easily access their records and hence avoid delays in their admissions, transfers or scholarship procedures.
Ensuring accessibility remains universal.
NCERT’s message is unequivocal: digital innovation must complement, not complicate, access to schooling. The APAAR framework may well represent the future of education record keeping in India, but its absence cannot and will not hinder a child’s education.As the Council highlighted, regardless of digital identifiers or document barriers, every child deserves access to education that is simple, seamless, and stress-free.
