Vibhu Suryavanshi has been on a record making/setting adventure for the last year or so and as he prepares for his second IPL Weather, the 15-year-old boy’s expectations are sky high. While the jury is still out on whether he can overcome the Blues for a second season — teams are better prepared to deal with his ferocity with the bat — Suryavanshi isn’t about to back down or get stuck. He showed glimpses last season that he could score a century and a fifty by scoring 252 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 206.56 with the best performance in the IPL. So, what can we expect from Suryavanshi in its second season? A lot more – plus these five iconic IPL records, once considered unbreakable, could very well fall to the 15-year-old.
Highest Individual Score – 175 (Chris Gayle)*
The highest individual score in the IPL belongs to the legendary Chris Gayle, when he unleashed a literal hellstorm – or ‘galestorm’, if you prefer to put it that way – at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, with a sensational 175 not out against a sensational Pune Warriors bowling attack with a sensational 175 not out for just 20 runs. With 13 fours and 17 sixes, it was a tour de force innings not seen since, and many believe it is a record that can stand the test of time. But with Vibhu Suryavanshi breaking all sorts of records left, right and centre, is Gayle’s record finally under threat? It can be very good. Suryavanshi really likes to go, exemplified when he comes in:His highest score in Youth T20s is 144 off just 42 balls – and he was dismissed in the 15th over. His highest score in youth ODIs is 175 off 80 balls in the final of the 2026 U-19 World Cup – and he was dismissed in the 26th over. His next best 171 came in the U-19 Asia Cup off just 95 balls and once again he was dismissed in the 33rd over. And he scored 190 off 84 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, getting out in the 27th over. Need some proof that this breakout beast can topple Chris Gayle’s unprecedented record for the highest individual score in the IPL?
Most sixes in an innings – 17 (Chris Gayle)
Again, the record belongs to Gayle, courtesy of the aforementioned innings. Hitting seventeen sixes in a team’s T20 innings is an insane feat in itself, but to say that alone is again out of the question. Then again, records are meant to be broken, and if there’s anyone who can eclipse the Great Gale, it’s the savage Suryavanshi.Back to examples: Suryavanshi hit 15 sixes during his innings of 144 in the Youth T20 game, and 15 more in the final of the U-19 World Cup, and another 15 in his innings of 190 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Then, it should be a fair bet that Suryavanshi can go three better in this IPL.
Most sixes in an edition – 59 (Chris Gayle)
And if we’re betting on Suryavanshi to break the record for most sixes in an innings, let’s take it a notch further and extend it to the most sixes in an IPL season as well. Not surprisingly, this record is held by Gayle who hit 59 sixes in the 2012 edition. Andre Russell scored 52 runs for KKR in the 2019 edition. Only two players have managed to hit more than 50 sixes in a single edition, with Gayle managing it twice (51 in the 2013 season). In his inaugural season, Suryavanshi hit 24 sixes in seven games. So, if he gets a full season of 14 matches, it would be naive to expect him to hit 50 sixes if he goes ahead.
Highest strike rate in a season – 234.34 (Jake Fraser-McGurk)
Now, that would be a tough record to break and would require some sort of parameter. Considering that Vaibhav Suryavanshi plays all 14 games or so, and manages to face at least 10 balls in each game, we put markers on at least 100 balls in a season to determine the best strike rate.Given that, Jake Fraser-McGurk’s 2024 season tops the list, having faced a total of 141 deliveries in nine matches with a strike rate of 234.34. And why do we think Suryavanshi might eclipse it? Well, Suryavanshi came close last season. He faced 122 balls in seven matches with a strike rate of 206.55. So if he has a windfall season this time around, Suryavanshi has a real chance of topping the charts when it comes to strike-rate as well – but here the rider has faced a fair number of balls.
Six sixes in an over
And finally, we have seen a record set in first-class cricket, List A and T20I – excluding the IPL: six sixes in an over. The best in IPL is five sixes in an over, which was hit five times. Gayle first hit five sixes off Pune Warriors’ Rahul Sharma in 2012. Rahul Tiyotia entered IPL folklore by hitting five sixes off West Indies international Sheldon Cottrell in 2020, and Ravindra Jadeja repeated the feat in 2021 by equaling the most runs scored in an over – with a four – against RCB’s Harshal Patel.Ranko Singh He then produced one of the most sensational finishes in IPL history, hitting Yash Dayal for five sixes in the last over to win KKR the match, and in 2025, Ryan Prag hit KKR’s Moeen Ali for five sixes. Will Suryavanshi – not only add his name to that list – complete the set with six sixes in an over – a first in the IPL?
